Check Fraud Scam Masquerading as Job Listing on Craig’s List

The Modem I was to buy with the check Mr. Scott would send me.

I woke up this morning to find a job offer in my email. It looked funky, but I’ve had job offers and legitimate interviews over Yahoo Messenger for real paying jobs, some of which I were hired for. It didn’t take long to find out that this was check fraud scam. I’ve reported it to Google, Yahoo and the US gov as well as a few scam watch sites. Part of the reason I’m posting this is because I want this information to be found if some one else is contacted by this scam. The information that they asked for was in the email I sent applying for the job so that was the first flag in the email itself, which Mr. Scott reiterated in the YIM conversation. He repeated questions asked in the email and once I started asking questions, either ignored them or answered them strangely (meaning he no longer had a script to copy and past from). Eventually He logged off YIM completely.

So here’s the email. Headers included:

Whee! So that’s how I spend my morning. Now to apply for real jobs, and clean the house.

Happy Thoughts in a Storm

So we’ve had this wonderful rainstorm all day. Now it has turned to snow, and we were just getting flowers too.

My office is an office now. I still have filing and stuff to put away. Blargh. It’s much better though.

Other than that I have one chapter left on my novel. ONE. And I will have a full manuscript which means time to edit. Just got to hunker down. Painting should recommence shortly as my painting area is set up. I primed a few minis yesterday but ran out of primer. I need to get some…maybe I’ll make it to Total Escape this weekend. I want to have the mini for our Warhammer RPG game finished. Wish me luck.

So I’m going to get some cleaning done. I’ve had a lot of web sites to do lately…so maybe I’ll finish putting up porfolio images.

Web Hosting Recommendations

Time and time again I deal with web hosts. Why not, I’m a web designer. I’m the poor fool who must design, upload and configure your hosting and frankly there are a lot crap hosting out there. It’s frightening really and embarrassing when I have to back to a client to tell them their hosting is suck.

Your hosting, as of this day in 2010, doesn’t need much. However there are a lot of folks who charge way too much and give you shit. I’m not going to talk about them. Instead here is what your hosting should have.

Storage: Near or above 1 gigabyte.
In the world of real it should have more but you really won’t need more than 500 megabytes if your aren’t going to post pictures. More is better simply because the web is expanding.

Bandwidth (AKA: Data or Data Transfer)
The 800lb gorilla of the web is bandwidth. Your hosting package should have 25 gigabytes or more. Unless you become famous, or are famous you probably won’t hit that. But it never hurts and all it takes is one Digg to send your site oblivion.

PHP
Really, your basic package should have this. It’s one of the languages along with ASP and ColdFushion which run applications on the web. If you don’t have PHP support at some point your going to want something that needs it and your host, who’s been holding back, is going to charge you for it. And they shouldn’t.

Access to at least 1 MySQL database.
You’re rarely going to need more than one for most websites but the good hosts give you at lest 10.

Control Panel
Not a control panel for your webpage but the actual software Control Panel. You should be able to log into the back end of your website and create everything easily in this day and age. If you have anything but Control Panel you’re almost always being over charged for your website. In my experience, this is as true as death and taxes.

Email
If you can’t get an email address with your URL at the end, you’re probably over paying. Just saying.

Finally who do I recommend? In my experience these are people with good customer service, great hosting packages that include one or more domain name and give you way more than what I’ve listed above…all for about $3-$10 dollars a month. It depends on the package. Most people, me included, just need the $3 a month packages.

Refuting the Need for IE6

The call to quit IE6 has gotten louder over the years. Now with the release of IE8 and PROOF that MS can make a standards compliant browser, those calls are turning to screams.

I am one of them.

Frankly IE6 is broken and old and should be tossed with the bath water. I am less and less inclined to bother checking my sites in them unless a client requests it. Why? Because there is less need. Lets go over the arguments for supporting IE6:

Most People Use It

While not only debatable it’s silly. First of all, just in case you had no idea (don’t worry most don’t), you can see who’s visiting your site with what. Most sites I develop have seen a serious down path in IE6 users over the last 7 years since IE6 release. Most sites don’t even garner 1%. Now if you want to say most people use IE as a whole you’d be right. But developing for IE7 is much easier and only needed a few tweaks and hacks…while so far IE8 needs NO tweaks or hacks. It’s a beautiful thing.

No one wants to spend the money to upgrade

Dude it’s free. Even MS isn’t that stupid. IE8 works on XP and Vista. If you don’t think it will run on 98 or Me (I’m sorry you’re still running that) get 7.

We are limited to IE6 at work because of proprietary software the company uses

Besides the fact they should upgrade for security reasons; you shouldn’t be surfing at work. I know we all do it, but you can’t cater to those who are doing something they shouldn’t. If, by chance, your job IS surfing the web you should be making a case for updating. Hammers aren’t screwdrivers. Get the right tools for your job, especially when free.

Websites shouldn’t limit the latest bling and I don’t need to see new bling on websites

IE6 not only doesn’t see the latest bling, it’s also 8 years behind STANDARDS. That’s right, it’s not to code. Things that IE6 can’t support have been around longer than IE6 and are no longer fads. Png, CSS, fricking padding are here to stay folks. MS upgraded the browers twice now. Even they know.

You can’t upgrade without a valid copy of windows

Dude pony up or get Firefox. FTL.

It’s time to drop IE6. Drop the support and you’ll have much saner webmasters.

Of Borders and Weddles and Witches and Brews…

The woman who hit my new car is claiming that I left the scene of the accident. Her insurance company is taking her side. Sigh. Why do people have to be evil? Even though the police and the fire department came to the scene. This really blows.

I headed out to 46th and Sheridan last night to check out Witches Brew. Let me say they have kick ass meeting space and parking! Their drink selection is small right now as are their pagan goodies. I’m sure it will grow. As long as that annoying kid isn’t a feature…I almost smacked him.

I’ve been working on character sketches for an old comic idea M. and I had. Ideas are unfolding in my head as I speak. It’ll work. Don’t freak M. I’m bringing it up tonight.

Aia has been asking for Junie B. Jones books. I just got the refund from the screwy not-so-wine-rackish wine rack I ordered so I’m getting her the first 4 books. That should be a good welcome home present.

I’ve been reading through Without Honor. I’ve done some more cutting and reorganizing…I even wrote some words in that evil chapter. Woot!

More reasons to hate Internet Explorer…Random Refusal

So this weekend entailed a lot of moving…and more moving. We are officially living with J. now. Though now comes the extra cleansing of his house and the rearranging of the furniture…and the unpacking….

Mom helped…and gave me more than one headache, a smashed hand and a renewed gladness she lives out of state.

Sigh…then today I found out that IE sucks even more than other versions of IE. It has problems with objects.

If you’re using Firefox you can see that little video down below….if you used IE before I fixed it earlier you got this:

For the love of god, gods, goddesses and/or fucking anything…use Firefox.

It’s not that I don’t want to…

Sigh.

If you’ve noticed…I’ve absorbed my articles and recipes into this blog. I’ve got some formating left to got…then some painting and the new site will be all.

Of course all creative efforts are at a standstill until after I move. No painting, no writing (except module writing) no sewing, no meditation, no real exercise, no tarot readings…

Suck.

The overwhelmed feeling is not going away. We still don’t have J.’s house cleaned as much as I would like. We are going to have to clean out from under his bead and vacuum. The down stairs is going to require that we stack stuff around the bar…

And my house is barely packed. I’ve managed to bring over my nightstands, one of Aia’s chairs and her tv stuff. All my linen is at J.’s now.

And yet…

I’m struggling with where to put stuff. The living room is easy…the hall, easy…the bedroom is not so much. I have a need to put my pagan stuff up but where…

sigh. This shouldn’t be so hard, but I’m moving fast because I have help now…I won’t have help later. Not that my friends wouldn’t help but their schedules were long set before I decided to move and I can’t expect them to rearrange for me. You’ve all offered when you can, I’m eternally grateful for that, but don’t worry if you can’t. I just expect you all to show to the Halloween party. ;)

I’m worried about J. His back has gotten worse over the last two years. Recently he hurt it worse and it is not getting better. I don’t resent that he can’t and shouldn’t help with the heavy stuff. I just wish I could help him.

I’m sure you’re all getting tired of the whining. If there is one thing about me you should know is that I have to talk everything out. Every detail otherwise I: a)forget, b)can’t sleep at night. So if it is continuously coming out of my mouth…I don’t do it to annoy people or to garner sympathy but because I have to get it out of me.

It’s like psychic puking only not so much.

Consolidation

Well now my article and recipes are all in the same blog. My quotes are (mostly) back up and now I just need to tweak that and the gallery and the review pages.

Whew.

I love aquamarines.

Now I’ve got to race across town to get my mail, get the dog and put more crap in the car (books, pillows, Aia’s altar, and something I’m forgetting) then get Aia and then get to J.’s.

Then dinner. Sigh.
