The White Queen by Philippa Gregory

The White Queen by Philippa Gregory is the story of Elizabeth Woodville, the daughter of a turncoat family during the War of the Roses and mother of the lost princes of the Tower of London.

The book is sweeping, starting with her marriage to Edward IV of York and ending with the ascension of the Tudors. The central mystery is that of the Princes of the Tower. I’ve read everything from history to vampire stories on the subject.

Gregory gives the characters a depth that made them entertaining and heart-wrenching. The literary license she takes seems acceptable and adds to the richness of rumors and historical text. A very good read.

Royal Children 1840-1980 by Celia Clear

I found this book in a used book store. This is an interesting portrait of royal family life in England since Victoria and Albert.

This glimpse is informative and revealing. Clear goes through each child’s life insofar as they are with the heir or are the heir to the throne. Many children get left by the wayside in this portrait because of this.

Clear has painted a wonderful picture of how far reaching Victoria’s reign was however she tends to romanticize many of the relationships. She does criticize some of the upbringing but she also works for the positive.

Overall it was a fun and interesting read.
