It’s that time again. A new moon means time to clean the altars.
I have a few altars. In the 90’s there was a book series (and movie) called the Ya Ya Sisters club. Not really my thing at the time but one of the books in the series was called Little Altars Everywhere. That phrase stuck with me, and now it’s pretty much a reality.
Not being Wiccan, I don’t have seasonal altars. Once it goes up it stays up. In fact I’m planning to put up a new one for some crossroads magic. It’s a work in progress.
First the altars. Besides the gods altar(pictured above), I’m not going to post pictures, yet. You can see a few on my Instagram. I may do a video in the future. Besides, while I want to write this now(instant gratification monster be damned.), I’m planning updates for my working altar as well. So we’ll just wait.
My working altar. As a witch this is my dedicated working spell space. Covered pretty much in stone implements.
My gods altar (pictured above). This contains all my various icons to various deities. Not all of them, but a fair amount including Buddhist, Taoist, Mayan, Hindu, Celtic, Slavic, Loa, and Norse. Oh look, now you know who I work with. There are a few spirit icons as well. This altar has an offering bowl and it’s where I do my daily draws.
My goddess altar. There are goddess on my gods altar but this one is just an unnamed goddess, some stones, incense burner and offering bowl.
Door Altar. This one has my protection bottle, some stones, and some welcoming spirit icons as well as some guardian ones.
Water / Money Altar. Technically these are two separate ones but they live in the same place. Water is just a font I keep up. The money bowl is currently in the East (2019 money location). It moves.
Ancestors/Ofrenda – A few pictures and offerings. Also home to a names god and goddess.
Protection altar – Just a candle I light daily, incense and a selenite egg.
Cleaning Altars Ritual
- What you need:
- A clean cloth & water
- Incense
- Aura Clearing spray of some kind. You can make or by this.
- Smudge – sage is fine
- Offering refills (I use vodka)
On the new moon, remove all items from the altar. Throw out ash or rake sand. This depends on what you’re using to burn incense. Refill sand if necessary. I don’t just dump it out unless it is full.
Wash all bowls, icons, item, etc. Wipe down the space. Spray with aura clearing spray.
Smudge the space. Place everything back where it goes and smudge some more. Refill the offering bowls, light incense. Thank the spirit of each altar space.
That’s it. It’s a simple monthly ritual.
